Engineer · University of Bath

Zach Slater.
Practical automation,
from first principles.

I'm a second-year Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering student at the University of Bath. I build small, real things — closed-loop irrigation rigs, custom PCBs, physics-y video games — and care about how engineering theory meets the workshop.

Selected projects

Things I've built.

Personal · 2025

Unity 2D physics game

A 2D platformer in Unity with a movement-meets-combat spell system. PID-controlled weapon physics; spring-board level mechanics derived from free-body diagrams.

Automatic plant waterer

Arduino + H-bridge + soil-moisture sensor on a 30-minute control loop, tuned over 3-day MATLAB sweeps. CAD-printed plant support and spray nozzle.

Modular weather display

PCB designed in KiCad with mixed through-hole and SMD soldering. Arduino fetches live weather and lights a panel of LED-backed symbols. Authored the technical report.

    Tenon Engineering

    • Worked alongside the design team — learnt how CAD is used in practice (tolerances, manufacturing trade-offs).
    • Observed mill and lathe operation; assembled a rubber plastometer and wired a rheometer.

Outside engineering

Music, scouting, and a brass band.

I play trombone in the University of Bath big band and jazz band. At school I founded and played in the jazz band (2022–2024) and played in the orchestra and brass band.

I've been a member of the 1st Claygate Scout & Guide Marching Band since 2014. Highlights: leading the Disneyland Paris marching parade twice, playing at the Menin Gate remembrance service in Ypres twice, and the Lord Mayor's Parade (broadcast on BBC1).

Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards. Eleven years in Scouts — including two as a Scout in Denmark when my family relocated. Scouting's values of preparedness and resilience changed how I approach almost everything.
